The Roots- Our Approach

Connection is where we begin

At MBS, we believe that how we are with one another matters as much as what we do.

Counselling begins with making room for the person—their experiences, relationships, questions and ways of communicating. You do not need to arrive feeling certain, find the right words or hide what feels unfinished.

We do not seek perfection. We seek connection.

The MBS Compass

Our Compass holds five connected values. Presence sits at its centre, with Connection, Curiosity, Compassion and Belonging around it.

These values offer places to return to when we are unsure what is needed.

Presence

Giving attention to the person and the moment before us. Making time to notice, listen and respond without rushing towards an answer.

Connection

Making room for a relationship to develop at your pace—with respect for closeness, distance, silence and choice.

Curiosity

Seeking to understand your experience without assuming we already know what it means. There is room for questions, complexity and uncertainty.

Compassion

Meeting difficult experiences with warmth and care. This includes honesty, appropriate boundaries and taking responsibility when something needs attention.

Belonging

Welcoming different ways of being and communicating. You do not need to become someone else to have your experience taken seriously.

Different ways to be heard

Connection does not always begin with words.

Talking, play, creativity, movement, storytelling and silence may all offer ways to explore. Together, we consider what feels appropriate for your age, needs, interests and preferences.

There is no expectation to perform, produce something or explain everything. We remain curious about what an experience means to you.

Choice and care belong together

Participation is an invitation.

You can ask questions, pause, decline an activity or tell me when something does not feel right. We will discuss how we work together, including confidentiality and its limits, so you can make informed choices.

Care also means being honest about what I can offer. When another kind of support may be needed, we can explore that together.

A place to return

These foundations are gathered within The Roots, the living Handbook of MBS Counselling and Wellbeing.

It brings together the stories, values and commitments beneath the work. You are welcome to explore it in your own way, taking what is useful and leaving what is not needed.

The Roots belongs beside you, not above you.
